Heaven forbid I glorify the US military, but I thought it worthwhile to put in a word for the losers and the suckers who didn’t make it back to the States in 1919.
I came upon this in Osprey’s Château Thierry & Belleau Wood by David Bonk and Peter Dennis (2007), and the impression it made can be seen in the early chapters of Household Gods.
The lady in her undies is paying tribute to the various nationalities who brought honour to their new country. Proper order.
I suppose that posting this can now get me detained at a US airport by hefty men in off-the-peg tac gear. I’m not bothered. I wasn’t planning on transatlantic travel any time soon. It might be a bit rough on my publisher and his family if they’re set on an American holiday, though.
